To enjoy the full-flavor of PhD you should enroll for full-time. By distance education, you will get a degree for a sake of getting one, there is huge gap between the quality full-time PhD and one that is not. Anyway, a properly done PhD through distance education will normally take anywhere from 7-10yrs. Thesis or dissertation writeup comes towards the last part of the process, usually 1-6 months should be enough for that, but the most difficult part is doing proper research and coming up with something tangible, and publishing your results in quality journals, without which a PhD completion is very unlikely. Hope that answers your question?
