What is your question?

It's my understanding is it's a matter of the program being designed around the intention of the study. If you are looking to become a college professor or professional researcher than the PhD is the program for you. If you are looking to go beyond the MBA level of learning in order to become even more qualified to effectively administer business than the DBA is the appropriate path. In short, if you want to be a college professor or researcher than becoming a PhD is the right choice. On the other hand, if you want to become a captain of industry with knowledge that goes beyond the normal MBA, you're looking for a DBA. Of course, I could be completely wrong. I'm making this distinction based on having read multiple program descriptions from universities offering such degrees.

Second Exec-MBA Vs PhD?
To give you a little background, I am 30 years old, completed my Exec-MBA in a top B-school in India(IIM), working in a top IT company. Now thinking about "what next?" in my pursuit for knowledge, I'm not sure what I want to do next. A PhD in Strategic Management(that was my major in my MBA) Vs a second-exec-MBA from another top school. While a PhD in Strategic sounds exciting, I'm not sure how much it will help me in achieving my goal of becoming a CEO of top IT company in another 5-10 years. Any suggestion/insight will be definitely helpful. Please advise.

Where are you looking at doing your Ph.D.? You say you completed your Exec-MBA from one of the IIMs? Perhaps you were referring to successful completion of the PGP-X program? Although a lot of premier B-schools in India will accept your PGP-X and grant you admission to doctoral level programs, such as say the Fellowship Programme in Management offered at the IIMs, I really doubt if you could gain admission to a Ph.D. programme offered by an UGC recognised university. What you get at the end of successful completion of the PGP-X is an award and not a degree.

Since you have done your MBA from a top B school in India and your major subject interest is Strategic Management I would suggest you to do a more specialised Doctorate degree rather than a general PHD. Information Technology or Management Information Systems is one of business management areas related where there is a huge demand for professionals. Rather a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) would be more useful in your case.Check out the source given it will give you a better understanding. Cheers !

You can go into management or human resources probably. You can work your way up to a management position in a hospital. Maybe a CEO I think you could definitely make a lot of money with your degree.

How do I do a PHd in America after living in UK?
I am in the final semester of my MSc in Sustainable rural development and project management and would like to do a PHd in a similar field or on climate change and public health in the USA but I have no idea how to go about applying. I would appreciate any advice at all.

I would never help anyone into anything sustainable or climate change related. It's all a load of crap made up to burden us with further taxes. Climate change is not man made! Everyone read about codex alimentarius to see how sustainability projects will effect us all!

You first need to see which universities offer PhD programs for the subject you are interested. A simple google search will give you results. Also, speak to professors in your dept to see if they know of any programs in the US. The universities website will have information on individual programs. They will tell you about requirements for admission, tuition, and any research or teaching opportunities associated w the program. They have instructions and how and when to apply for the programs. You may be a little too late in the year to apply for Autumn 2010 admission, as many graduate schools stopped taking applications in January or earlier, so you may need to wait to apply for next spring semester (2011) or the following autumn. Keep checking the universities' websites to see any updates about when applications have opened.

I am an undergrad I/O Psych student and would love to have a PhD but I am also interested in the field of HR Management...what should I pursue?

speaking only for myself, the classes and problems one works on in real life are much more interesting for I/O Psych.

They both are good field, it really depends on what kind of job you would like to do in the future. Master program is a lot easier than PhD program for busy working adult. I have tried to get my PHD before and they have so much homework that I drop the class and go for another Master degree instead.

And once 3 A Ph.D. in management seems odd also. Management responsibilities mainly are personality. I don't think many CEOs have a Ph.D. in management. 4. Finance Ph.D.s study the theory of money, interest,, banking, and investments. Your research will deal mainly with those elements. 5. A Ph.D. in Econ is hardcore theory of why people spend money and how companies compete to make the most money from those people. On real point of being an Econ Ph.D. is that you will be the guy who says what a lot of conservatives say but has gone to school for so long that it sticks. PhDs in econ often advisement and are in high profile economic trend analysis positions. PhD level degrees in most fields are mainly geared toward research and/or teaching.
